Airplane Travel

As a pet owner who intends to move or travel with your pet, there are many things you should know and prepare for.

Here are some tips you may find helpful:

  • Make sure the airline can accommodate the pet carrier; planes have varying cargo door dimensions. Contact the airline well in advance of your flight to check on this matter.
  • Let the pet spend time in the shipping container for short periods of time in the several days before the trip.
  • Withhold food and water at least 4 hours before departure.
  • Remove all collars and choke chains.
  • Don't tranquilize the animal. Lowering the respiration rate of an animal at high altitudes can cause serious problems or death.
  • After landing, wait three to four hours to feed the pet. Instead, offer a treat or some ice chips to prevent dehydration.
